Iran will always stand by Lebanon in the fight against Israel’s aggression and terrorism, says the Iranian foreign minister.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported dialog, mutual understanding and national unity in Lebanon and along with the Lebanese government, army, people and resistance will stand against Zionist aggression, terrorism and extremism,” Mohammad Javad Zarif said in meeting with a delegation of distinguished religious figures from Lebanon in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Wednesday.
A central plank of Iran’s foreign policy is to “back pure Islam and the cause of Palestine irrespective of sectarian leanings,” said Zarif.
For his part, Sheikh Ahmad al-Zein, the head of the delegation, said that religious scholars in Lebanon have always insisted on Muslims’ unity and defended the Palestinian cause and will continue to stick to their beliefs and practices.
Muslim scholars have used Iran as a role model to foster unity and counter the enemy’s divisive plots, Sheikh Hassan Abdullah, the secretary general of Lebanon’s Muslim Scholars Gathering, said.
Sheikh Zahir al Jaeed, the secretary general of the Islamic Action Front of Lebanon, also appreciated Iran’s support for the Lebanese resistance movements and the Palestinian cause.
The Lebanese delegation is in Iran to attend the 28th International Islamic Unity Conference in the Iranian capital.
Hundreds of Sunni and Shia scholars and intellectuals from more than 60 countries are attending the conference titled Unified Islamic Ummah: Challenges and Strategies.
The participants will discuss ways to promote unity and solidarity in the Muslim world and will focus on problems facing the Islamic world, such as the threat posed by Takfiri militants.
