Iraqi parliament to convene on Sunday

iraq_govtIraq’s newly re-elected President Jalal Talabani will officially name incumbent Premier Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister-designate on Sunday.

Maliki will also be given one month to form his cabinet, ending the country’s long-lasting political deadlock after the country’s general elections in March.

The Sunday parliament session is to focus on the formation  of the Council of Representatives’ committees and the chamber’s regulations, Shiite News reported.

Earlier this month, Iraq’s main factions reached an agreement based on Maliki remaining in office another term and the Kurdish alliance’s Talabani retaining the presidency.

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi of Iraqiya Alliance will also be a part of the government, as head of Iraq’s Council of Strategic Policy.

Iraqi lawmakers, moreover, elected Osama al-Nujaifi as parliament speaker. The post is to be held by Iraqiya.

Iraqiya managed to win most seats in the March 7 parliamentary elections, but failed to secure the absolute majority needed for a mandate.
