He said they (Sunnis) cannot accept the bill keeping in view the background of the man who worked for the bill and his (outlawed) sectarian organisation.

Mufti Gulzar Naeemi also cited flaws in the procedure for the controversial bill.

He said that the movers had not consulted concerned religious authorities. They should have got Council of Islamic Ideology (CII)’s approval prior to bring this bill to the legislature.

He further said that Islamic issues relate to the entire country; hence Punjab Assembly should not have taken this step.

Any law relating to deal with such issues require all stakeholders on same page but it has divided the nation.

Similarly, Mufti Navaid Abbasi also opposed the bill.

Earlier, Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leaders addressed a press conference in Lahore.

They said they reject the bill because it violates Shia Muslims fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution of Pakistan.

They said nobody can impose their interpretation of religion to others; hence they oppose the bill.

Meanwhile, MWM Pakistan leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafari spoke to senior media persons in Islamabad.

He explained his viewpoint on the issue. He said the Constitution of Pakistan has guaranteed rights of all Muslim and non-Muslim citizens.

Islamic article 227 makes it clear that each school of thought enjoys Constitutional right to interpret Quran and Sunnah as its fiqh (jurisprudence).

Hence, many Sunni and Shia Muslim scholars and Sufis have rejected the bill.

Intelligentsia turned down the bill outright. Media persons such as Irshad Bhatti and Haroon Rasheed also opposed the bill.
