Police investigators suspect that various factions of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) joined forces to carry out a deadly bomb attack on the convoy of Sindh High Court’s Justice Maqbool Baqar, who narrowly escaped the attack on Wednesday morning.
“It does not appear to be an act of terrorism by a single terrorist outfit. Several factions of the LeJ, including Qari Zafar Group, Naeem Bukhari group and terrorists belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) could have been behind this deadly attack,†SSP Raja Umer Khattab said.
Raja Umer Khattab was of the view that terrorists almost did their job as the explosion killed nine police and Rangers personnel but Justice Baqar miraculously remained safe.He said that in June 2011, two high-profile terrorists of the banned sectarian outfit LeJ, Farhan and Azam Ahmed Shaikh were arrested who belonged to Naeem Bukhari and Qari Zafar factions of LeJ, who had joined hands to carry out recce of his home but they were arrested before they could implement their plan.“Farhan is still in jail but Azam Ahmed Shaikh was released in June 2012. Both were high-profile terrorists, having graduate level education in science subjects,†he claimed.
He said he doubts that it was an act of Asif Choto faction of LeJ which is more active in Balochistan and especially called for terrorist activities in other parts of the country.
“Qari Zafar and Naeem Bukhari factions of LeJ have links with al-Qaeda and Taliban as Qari Zafar was assassinated in a drone attack. LeJ is more organised in cities like Karachi but they could not carry out such a nearly-perfect terrorist act without TTP, al-Qaeda support†he said adding that at least it received logistics support from the TTP.
Regarding any luck to find any clue from the crime scene, he said the bike used in the attack was shattered into pieces and so far they were unable to detect its registration, chases or engine number while its registration plate was also badly damaged beyond recognition.
“In such attacks, usually they use fake number plates so it would be of little help for the investigators,†he added.
On the other hand, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) claimed that it was an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) prepared with locally-made high explosive and detonating cord was used in it as a booster.
“It was a command link device, weighing a maximum of 6 kg of explosives with ball bearings and it was detonated with a remote control,†an official of BDS claimed adding that the terrorist who pushed the bomb’s remote control button was standing approximately 60-78 metres away from the motorcycle bomb.
“The serious impact of the bomb was within 30 metres while its general impact was 40 to 50 metres,†the officials said adding that the shockwaves, metal pieces and ball bearings seriously injured people within 30 metres of the explosion.
“It was the work of a professional, who used all the right ingredients, prepared a sophisticated IED and successfully detonated it on the right moment,†he said adding that the bomb destroyed SHC’s judge’s car, two police mobiles, a few motorcycles, a metallic letter box and walls of the mosque.
He said they had sent the samples of explosives used in the IED to the lab for confirmation whether it was a home-made or factory-made explosive used in the blast but added that their experience suggest it was locally-made high explosive Calcium Ammonium Nitrate and other ingredients.
