Chinese nuclear-capable missiles can hit US: Pentagon reports

The Pentagon has warned in a new report that China is able to hit United States by its nuclear missile technology. China currently has dozens of nuclear-capable missiles that could target almost the entirety of the United States.

The Department of Defense’s 2015 report on the Chinese military claimed that the Asian power has the ability to deliver nuclear warheads nearly anywhere on earth, Business Insider reported on Monday.

The report detailed China’s military plans, its modernization, and its advancing missile capabilities. According to the report, China’s longest-ranging of the missiles, known as the CSS-4, can target almost the entirety of the US except for Florida.

The CSS-4, which is a nuclear-capable missile, has the largest range of any Chinese Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). The Pentagon report also noted that the missile is housed in silos across the Chinese countryside and Beijing is estimated to have between 50 and 60 silo-based ICBMs.

The report said China modernized its missile forces because of “continued advances in the US and, to a lesser extent, Russian strategic ISR [Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance], precision strike, and missile defense capabilities.”

The annual report to Congress earlier stated that the Chinese military is set to build nearly 42,000 land-based and sea-based drones. China is also developing long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for intelligence gathering and bombing attacks, according to the Pentagon.

“The acquisition and development of longer-range UAVs will increase China’s ability to conduct long-range reconnaissance and strike operations,” it said.
