Saudi Arabia’s Arab News tried it best to get an anti-Iran statement from Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi but the latter emphasised unity of Muslims in interview to Saudi daily.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Pakistan is willing to play a role to help resolve some of the region’s long-standing issues between Muslim countries.
He said this speaking exclusively to Arab News on the sidelines of the 14th Islamic Summit Conference in Makkah. He sat next to Iran’s representative Raza Najafi at the meeting of the OIC foiregn ministers.
Pakistan government viewpoint vindicates Iran government’s position
The Saudi daily put questions regarding Persian Gulf situation, Iran role and GCC related issues.
He said Pakistan believes that this region is in flux. We have some very serious issues in the region. Our message is that we have to join hands; we have to understand each other’s concerns. And have a collective objective of peace and stability so that our region can develop like other parts of the world.
Qureshi emphasised the point that all this needs a concerted effort. How we are going to achieve what we want to achieve if we do not sit and resolve our issues through diplomatic means? We should keep on joining hands, as that is the only way forward.”
With around 5 million Pakistanis working in the Gulf, the region is of special interest to Islamabad.
Furthermore, He said that Pakistan has excellent relations with all (Persian) Gulf countries, historically and traditionally.
He cited its economic importance for Pakistan and fulfillment of Pakistan’s energy requirements from the Gulf.
So, he said, Pakistan always advocated peace within the GCC states. And they need to resolve issues within them through dialogue. You can agree to disagree, but you can reconnect to resolve.
Qureshi said that any country isolating itself from the rest of the Muslim world because of pursuing a particular policy would suffer negative consequences.
Most importantly, Iran has publicly offered non-aggression pact and Dialogue Assembly to GCC and Arab neighbours.
However, he said Iran is part of the region. It is a country that you have to live with. Pakistan share a border with Iran, so we recognize the challenges. But, we have to see how those tensions can be defused and resolved.
Also, he cited that Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called on him in Islamabad. He said he called for restraint, calm, and resolution of issues through diplomatic channels.
He said conflict will not pay. It will only aggravate the situation. People want to see peace and stability in the entire region and we all have to play a responsible role.
It is relevant to add that what Shah Mehmood Qureshi said vindicated the Iranian position on the said issues.
Most importantly, Iran has publicly offered non-aggression pact to GCC and Arab neighbours. Iran has publicly offered Dialogue Assembly. But Saudi Arabia and UAE, under the dictation of Israel’s patron United States, refused talks and dialogue.
Therefore, Pakistan government viewpoint vindicates Iran government’s position. Both agree that Muslim regimes need to join hands on common issues instead of esacation.
