Clashes erupted between mourners (Azadars) and Indian government forces after a Azadari procession was stopped in uptown Batmaloo area of the summer capital of Srinagar.
Witnesses say after they were stopped mourners tried to break the security cover which was retaliated teargas shells by the Indian occupied forces.
Earlier authorities imposed restrictions in areas falling under six police stations of Indian held Kashmir’s capital Srinagar in view of the Muharram Processions and protest call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani.
In an oredr here Thursday, The District Commisioner Baseer Ahmed Khan said restrictions would be imposed on the movement of public and transport in the jurisdiction of police stations Shaheed Gunj, Sheerghari, Kothibagh, Maisuma, Kralkhud and Karan Nagar.
The restrictions would imposed from 0600 hours “till furture orders” the order said.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar is directed to implement this order in letter and spirit,it added.
Geelani had on Tuesday asked people to stage “Symbolic protest demonstrations after Friday Prayers against the Israeli aggrassion on Gaza”.
Successive governments in the state have been disallowing traditional processions on the eighth and tenth of Muharram since the armed insurgency broke out in the late 80’s.Meanwhile, from last 12 years for shias in kashmir it is a ban to come out with procession on muharram but the Shia Muslims of Indian held Kashmir had been taken out the processions on these days by violating the Government restrictions.
