The US government is encouraging terrorism in Syria by supplying arms to foreign-backed militants operating in the conflict-stricken country, an analyst tells Press TV.
“The US and its NATO allies are actually instigating terrorism in Syria. The policy is extremely aggressive and extremely criminal,” Scott Rickard told Press TV in an interview.
He said the US is arming terrorists against a “sovereign nation” which recently reelected Bashar al-Assad as president.
The United States is reportedly providing antitank weapons, such as BGM-71 TOW (Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided) missiles, to Syria militants as the government of Assad is set to beat the deadly three-year militancy.
Rickard said the US-supplied weapons are “falling into the wrong hands” in Syria.
He called into question the US claims that the weapons are provided for “moderate” militants, saying, “I challenge the United States or any of its NATO partners to find a ‘moderate group’ that has been fighting against al-Assad for three years.”
The analyst said the US government is prolonging the “multi-year criminal war” in Syria.
Even the head of the so-called Free Syrian Army, Abdul-Ilah al-Bashir, has warned that the US arms supplies to militants in Syria could turn the Arab country into another Somalia.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Over 160,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the militants.
According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
