The European Parliament is set to hold a public hearing on Freedom of religion or belief: the situation of persecuted minorities on Wednesday (November 22, 2017) at its headquarters in the Belgian capital Brussels, which will discuss the discrimination practiced against Shias in Bahrain.

A number of speakers from a variety of faiths will be taking part in the public hearing including Ahmed Shaheed, UN Special Representative on Freedom of Religion or Belief and Jan Figel, Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion and belief outside the EU. The speakers will focus on the situation of Christians in the Middle East, the serious but little known discrimination against Christians in China, the discrimination against Shias in Bahrain and elsewhere and the persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar, including its historical background.

This is the first time the European Parliament holds a hearing that discusses the persecution of Shia citizens in Bahrain.
