An Iranian lawmaker has censured Western countries for being the main protagonists behind the killings of Shia Muslims in Pakistan through terrorist organizations in the country.
“Targeted killings of Shia Muslims in Pakistan have escalated in recent years as Westerners plan to eradicate Shias in Pakistan by provoking and arming Salafist extremist groups,†Member of Iran Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Abbasali Mansouri Arani said on Sunday.
He added that assaults on Shia community in Pakistan hurt the entire Muslim world.
Mansouri Arani said the West is extremely concerned about unity among Muslims because division and discord weakens the Islamic world.
The Iranian legislator also lamented the silence of international institutions in the face of Shia massacre in Pakistan, calling on the world’s humanitarian bodies to adopt effective measures and stop violence in the country.
Pro-Taliban militants have been involved in a violent campaign against Shia Muslims in Pakistan over the past years.
Shias living in Kurram tribal region have been facing a humanitarian crisis since November 2007, when the pro-Taliban groups cut off the area from the rest of the country.
Local sources say hundreds of Shia Muslims have been killed in the region since the start of the campaign.
Several Shia religious gatherings have also been targeted in different parts of the country over the past few months.
