Iran’s principled policy is to support lasting security and tranquility in, and the integrity and national unity of Iraq, says Iran’s Majlis speaker.
“The current circumstances in the region necessitate further unity and solidarity among Iraqi political and national parties, and the Islamic republic of Iran backs any approach in that regard,” Ali Larijani said in meeting with Iraqi lawmaker Adel Abdul-Mahdi in Tehran on Wednesday.
Larijani further urged Iraqi groups, political parties and elites to remain vigilant.
Also on the ongoing crisis in Syria and the sensitive situation in the Middle East, the speaker stated that the establishment of security and stability in the region is contingent upon collective cooperation by all regional countries.
Syria has been gripped by a deadly crisis since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
The sky is the limit for the expansion of cordial and all-out relations with Iraq, said the Majlis speaker, calling for closer parliamentary cooperation with Baghdad as well.
Abdul-Mahdi, for his part, said all Iraqi political groups see eye to eye on the necessity of boosting ties with Iran, and added the enhancement of parliamentary relations can open up a new vista for bilateral ties.
