Baghdad Friday prayer leader condemned Saudi insult to Ayatollah Sistani

The Friday prayer leader of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, condemned the Saudi media’s insulting action against the Iraqi Shiite supreme authority Ayatollah Ali al Sistani.

In response to a recent insult to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani, Baghdad Friday prayer leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Yaseenn al-Mousawi said that Ayatollah Sistani’s emphasis on internal peace and the unity of Iraqis was the main reason for the newspaper’s insult.

Ayatollah al-Mousawi stated that the experience of the US occupation of Iraq shows that this country and its allies, especially the UAE and Saudi Arabia, intend to destroy Iraq with weapons, force and terrorism.

The Saudi daily Asharq Al-Awsat insulted Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani, Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, in a cartoon on Friday, which provoked a wave of anger and reactions against Saudi Arabia and its state-sponsored media

Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets of the capital, Baghdad, on Sunday to condemn the Saudi newspaper’s insult to the sanctity of Iraq’s Shiite supreme authority, and Saudi’s policies and US interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.

The demonstrators converged outside the gates of the heavily-fortified Green Zone, which is home to several embassies and government offices including the parliament and the prime minister’s office, on Sunday, seeking to break into the Saudi embassy.

The participants demanded that the Iraqi government adopt a clear stance on the insult to the prominent religious figure.
