Over 1,300 killed, 1,800 injured in Iraq in August: UN

The United Nations (UN) says a total of 1,325 Iraqis lost their lives and 1,811 others sustained injures in the month of August in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict.

In a report published on Tuesday, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said 585 civilians and 740 security personnel, including voluntary forces fighting alongside the Iraqi army, were among those killed in Iraq in August, adding that the number of civilians wounded stood at 1,103.

Baghdad was the worst hit province with 1,069 civilian casualties, consisting of 318 people killed and 751 others injured.

The number of civilian casualties in the Western Anbar Province was also put at 187, based on information obtained by UNAMI from the Anbar Health Directorate.

The UNAMI figures showed that a total of 1,332 Iraqis were killed and 2,108 others injured in terrorist attacks and violence in July.

Gruesome violence has plagued the northern and western parts of Iraq ever since Daesh terrorists launched their terror campaign in June 2014, and took control of parts of the Iraqi territory.

Units of army soldiers, backed by volunteer fighters, are seeking to win back militant-held regions in joint operations.
