Bombing kills Iraqi anti-al-Qaeda sheik, 6 fighters

iraq carblastA bomb attack in Iraq has killed a prominent pro-government tribal sheik along with six of his fighters in the west of the country, Iraqi police say.

Five civilians were also injured by the bombing against Sheik Saeed Fleih al-Osman — a councilman and a leader for anti-al-Qaeda Sunni tribal fighters in the town of Haditha in Anbar province, said the town’s police chief Colonel Farouq al-Jughaifi on Friday.

The bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into Osman’s guesthouse late on Thursday, the police said.

The latest incident of violence came at a time when Iraqi troops, backed by local Sunni tribesmen, are fighting al-Qaeda-affiliated militants in the country’s western regions, including Anbar province.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry has said that militants have launched an open war in Iraq and they want to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.

Official figures say some 1,013 people were killed in January alone, making it the deadliest month in Iraq since April 2008.
