Clad in black Shia Muslims began mourning on Chehlum of Imam Hussain

Shia Muslims across the world began mourning on the anniversary of Chehlum of Imam Hussain (AS) and other Martyrs of Karbala as the sun of 19th Safar set with the start of the night of anniversary of Arbaeen (or Shab-e-Chehlum).


Pakistani Shia Muslims observe continued mourning from Moharram to 8th Rabi ul Awwal every year to commemorate the great martyrs of Karbala whose leader was infallible Imam Hussain (AS) in the desert of Karbala in 61 A.H.

At night before Arbaeen or Chehlum and on the day of Arbaeen-e-Hussaini (AS), Shia Muslims hold mammoth congregations and mourning processions. They offer special prayers and also recite the Ziarat of Arbaeen that was authored by 11th infallible Imam of Shia Islam Hazrat Hassan Askari.

Children, youths, elderly persons and women, all participate in the mourning congregations and processions that are called majlis-e-aza and juloos-e-aza or matami juloos in Pakistan.

Beating their chest raising the slogans of Ya Hussain (AS), they pay homage to all the martyrs of Karbala. Now, all this has begun after Maghrib and Isha prayers in all over Pakistan. Shia majority areas turned black with black dress, flags, banners and tents, to mourn the brutal massacre of Imam Hussain (AS), his family members, blood relatives and companions.

Shia Muslims renew their allegiance and pledge to remain loyal to the 14 infallible leaders of Shia Islam and act upon their teachings and promote their divine and sacred values in their practical life and in the society. They are now pledging that they would never forget Imam Hussain (AS) and his martyr companions and saying yes to the call of Imam Hussain (AS). They are sharing condolence with the Ahl-e-Bait (AS) and in particular 12th infallible Imam Hazrat Mohammad Mahdi (AS) and his deputies top of them are Grand Ayatollah Imam Khamenei and also sharing condolence with each other.

At least 20 million Shia Muslims have reached Karachi so far to commemorate the Arbaeen there on Arbaeen or Chehlum anniversary.
