Millions of Pakistanis in every nook and cranny of the country have come on streets along with their families to commemorate the 40th day of anniversary of Imam Hussain (AS)’s martyrdom in Karbala.
Like Iraq, 20th Safar falls on Tuesday in Pakistan unlike Iran where Monday was 20th Safar and Iranians and some other parts of the world observed the Chehlum on Monday with traditional religious and revolutionary fervor and reverence.
Chanting Ya Hussain (AS) and beating their chests to mourn the brutal assassinations of Grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PUBUH), his family members and comrades in 61 A.H., almost all Shia Muslims left their houses for the main processions and congregations in their respective cities, towns and villages.
Till the filing of this report, main procession in Karachi was on its way from Imam Bargah Mehfil-e-Shah-e-Khorasan to Hussainian Iranian Kharadar in Karachi.
The most sensitive procession was on its way in Rawalpindi that will culminate at Qadeemi Imam Bragh. Outlawed terrorist group Sipah-e-Sahaba (renamed Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat) had threatened to attack the procession but Shia leaders such as Allama Nasir Abbas and Amin Shaheedi of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, Allama Sajid Naqvi of Shia Ulema Council and Allama Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi of Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafaria categorically responded to the threats saying they would personally lead the procession and face bullets on their chest first if there is any attack.
Plots were made to change the route of the procession but Shia leadership remained united and made it clear that change of route could be changed on their dead bodies because they would prefer embracing martyrdom instead of changing the centuries-old route of the Chehlum procession in Pindi.
Processions of Chehlum were on their ways in Lahore, Gilgit, Peshawar, Skardu, Parachinar, Quetta, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Nultan, Ahmed Pur Sial, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Taunsa Sharif, Bahawalpur, Attock, Kohat, Bannu, Bahawal Nagar, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Kohat, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Tando Jam, Matli, Badin, Khairpur, Rohri, Naushero Feroze, Nawabshah, Dadu, Sehwan Sharif, Larkana, Shikarpur, Moro, Sakrand, Hala, Bhit Shah, Matiari, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Tando Ghulam Ai, Umer Kot, Mirpurkhas, Mithi, Thatta, Daro, Chuhar Jamali, Jati, Mirpur Sakro, Hub, Dera Allah Yar, Skardu, Astoor, and other parts of Pakistan.
Youths are carrying the symbols of banners of Islam, flags attributed to Hazrat Abbas Alamdar (AS).
The day of Chehlum began with the special prayers and Ziarat-e-Arbaeen. Then, religious scholars addressed mourning congregations and after that the processions was brought out. The participants offered Zohr and Asr prayers during the processions.
The purpose to observe the Chehlum anniversary is to commemorate the sacrifices of the great martyrs of Karbala who are great martyrs of Islam and humanity who challenged and resisted the despotic tyrant rule of Umayyad dynastic ruler Yazid.
