Entry of 21 ulema banned in Rawalpind

pakmap 18.12.2009 Rawalpinidi, Pakistan (SN) The entry of 21 ulema (religious scholars) of different sects has been banned in the district during Muharram, said City Police Officer (CPO), Rawalpindi, Rao Muhammad Iqbal on Friday. During a news conference here, the CPO said police had declared 36 imambargahs sensitive in the district. He said eight companies of army and rangers would be present in the city during Muharram. He said police had finalised Muharram security arrangements for the city. Iqbal said a control room had been established in the CPO’s offices to monitor the situation during Muharram. Sharpshooter to be deployed: The police of all the four districts of Rawalpindi Division will deploy sharpshooters on the rooftops of the buildings along the route of mourning processions during Muharram, said a press release. The Regional Police Officer (RPO) has directed the police of all the four districts to deploy sharpshooters on the rooftops of buildings along the route of mourning procession of Muharram. He said the shooters should remain on duty round the clock and would be authorised to shoot miscreants. He said the police in collaboration with other law-enforcement agencies had beefed up the security in sensitive areas in the region. He said a control room had been established in RPO office to coordinate the police of all the four districts of the division and SP was the in charge of the control room. He said the police officials and the officers would remain in the control room round the clock in three shifts and will dispatch the report of the law and order situation to IG office Lahore after every 15 minutes. He said special cards would be issued to those people who would set up ‘Niaz’ and ‘Sabeel’ stalls along the route of the mourning processions.
