Police cops among 9 martyred in suicide bombing near shrine of Data Darbar in Lahore. Victims included at least nine, including five policemen dead and 26 others injured.
The officials described it a suicide bombing. They said it targeted an Elite Force van detailed to the security of the Data Darbar shrine in Lahore today.
15-year-old boy came out of a fruit shop, crossed over to the police van, and then exploded his suicide vest.
At 8:45am this morning, the blast took place in the proximity of a police mobile parked near Data Darbar’s Gate 2, the entrance for female visitors to the shrine. The huge bang shattered the windows in nearby vehicles and buildings.
Most imprtantly, Police officials believe a suicide bomber perpetrated the attack.
Teenage suicide bomber
Furthermore, the Punjab chief minister’s spokeman Shahbaz Gill told the media that the attacker was a 15-year-old boy.
He said the teenager came out of a fruit shop, crossed over to the police van, and then exploded his suicide vest.
An initial probe has revealed that the bomb contained seven kilograms of explosive material.
Television footage showed the husks of damaged vehicles littering the pavement near the shrine as first responders rushed to the scene.
Moreover, King Edward Medical University Vice Chancellor Professor Khalid Gondal said the death toll has risen to nine (including a suspected attacker).

There, an emergency has been imposed.
Seven bodies shifted to Mayo Hospital while two at the morgue in King Edward Medical University.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Arif Nawaz confirmed martyrdoms of five Elite Force personnel in the blast.
Police set up checkpoints on main thoroughfares leading to the shrine. Government put hospitals on alert.
The cops immediately moved the devotees out through exits away from the blast site. Since then, they have restricted entry to Data Darbar.
The police cordoned off the spot for rescue efforts and investigation.
Importantly, a heavy contingent of police, Counter-Terrorism Department and forensic officials collected evidence from the scene.
The IGP said police would share their findings once they conclude their probe.
He has directed all regional police officers and city police officers to examine security arrangements in their respective areas. Due to possibility, he askd them to remain alert during the month of Ramazan.
