Saudi soldier killed in landmine explosion along Yemen border

A Saudi soldier has been killed in a landmine explosion along the border with Yemen, the Saudi Interior Ministry said late Tuesday.

The soldier died when a Border Guard patrol hit the landmine at about 7:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) Tuesday morning in the southwestern Saudi region of Jizan.

The Saudi Interior Ministry statement did not provide further details.

The regime in Riyadh launched its fatal campaign against the impoverished nation of Yemen on March 26, 2015, in an attempt to bring back to power Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, Yemen’s resigned president, and to undermine the Houthi movement. Yemeni fighters have also retaliated, inflicting losses on the Saudi military across the border.

More than 9,400 people have been killed in airstrikes conducted by Saudi Arabia ever since the campaign began.

Human Rights Watch says it has “compelling evidence” that British weapons are being used by Saudi Arabia in the war on Yemen, including against civilian targets.

On June 29, United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said UN-mediated talks in Kuwait City to end the conflict in Yemen will be adjourned until July 15.
