Deputy of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center Abbas Shouman underlined that acts of terrorism perpetrated in the name of Islam have nothing to do with the religion.
He made the remark in a seminar on combating terrorism, adding that it is everyone’s duty to stand up against terrorists, al-Misriyun daily reported.
Shouman also underlined the role of scholars and thinkers to guide the youth and prevent them from falling into the trap of extremist and terrorist groups.
Egypt has witnessed a series of terrorist attacks recently.
On Thursday, suspected fighters fired a barrage of rockets and set off a car bomb in a series of attacks in Egypt’s North Sinai province, killing at least 26 people.
Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian affiliate of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, claimed responsibility for the attacks that struck the provincial capital of El-Arish, the nearby town of Sheik Zuwayid and the town of Rafah bordering the Gaza Strip.
